Is Simon Cowell's 'sacking' of Cheryl Cole on US X Factor just a farce?

It's hard not to be suspicious

Cheryl Cole is a stunner

We don't even know if Cheryl Cole actually has been dumped from the US X Factor.

As Simon Cowell's former squeeze Sinitta has pointed out, he ain't confirmed it.

We're used to all the drama and spats surrounding the talent show and somehow it all seems rather contrived.

After reading Ben Elton's novel Chart Throb, it's hard not to believe this latest debacle is anything but clever pantominme.

Did it really take until now to discover that American audiences coudn't understand 27-year-old Cheryl's Newcastle accent? Or that she wouldn't get on with 48-year-old Paula Abdul?

Perhaps Nicole Scherzinger was the real judge all along and Cheryl's little taster trial was just a way of boosting her profile in the US. 

After all, the rumours were that Cheryl had been relegated to a 'adviser' role long ago.

'Is it all panto? Is [Cheryl] going to come back to the UK X Factor? Ohhh, can we stand the excitement?' DJ Neil Fox told Channel 4 News.

Mmmm... guess we're going to have to wait and see. It feels a bit like when Louis Walsh was axed from The X Factor in 2007, only to be given back his job.

But then again, Kelly Brook was dropped from Britain's Got Talent in 2009 after only 6 days of filming and that definitely didn't feel like a scripted bit of fun.

Simon Cowell's a genius - only he could have seen the potential in novelty recordings featuring the Teletubbies, Zig and Zag and the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

So he knows what he's playing at and even though his catchphrase is, 'Listen, do you want me to be honest with you?', he's never going to reveal his masterplan.
