Consider these words: Sandra Bullock. Boss from Hell. Downtrodden assistant. Fake marriage to dodge immigration.
Nope, I wasn't getting a good feeling about The Proposal.
Happily Sandra Bullock who plays publishing's answer to the Terminator, and Ryan Reynolds, her lowly go-fer who dreams of being a Pulitzer-winning author, do more than pull this one out of the bag.
Sandra is Margaret Tate, brilliant as an executive but not so successful as a human being.
Because of a mix-up over her visa the Canadian Margaret has to marry a US citizen or be deported.
Obviously Andrew Paxton (Ryan) will do. After all, he fetches her tampons and even drinks the same foul cinnamon flavoured coffee as she does to avert the crisis of Starbucks messing up her order.
But US immigration is on to their little plan and the two have a weekend with Andrew's family in Alaska to learn enough about each other to prove their marriage isn't a sham.
Typical romcom stuff but what makes this good is that Ryan and Sandra work really well together and not just going through the motions.
Definitely worth a look. Even brought a tear to my cynical old eye.
The Proposal is released on Buena
Vista Home Entertainment Blu-ray Hi-Def Combi Pack and single disc DVD from the
30th November.
