I challenge you not to cry at the tale of a delinquent labrador and the impact he has on the lives and soft furnishings of his hapless owners.
Marley & Me is based on the true story of newspaper columnist John Grogan and his faithful but badly behaved dog Marley.
John (Owen Wilson) buys the puppy for his new wife Jennifer (Jennifer Aniston) to try to silence the ticking of her biological clock.
Unwittingly they’ve bought the hound from hell. Marley is untameable – he even gets expelled from obedience classes. He poos where he shouldn’t, wrecks everything and eats gold necklaces for breakfast.
But the film veers from slapstick to an exploration of the real problems to hit the Grogans, who like many other couples, have to deal with tragedy and the pressures of family life.
The film’s been a hit in America and looks set to do the same here with its message that even the naughtiest dog can teach us some new tricks.
