Remember that phase when you thought it would be really cool if you knew how to breakdance?
Monday, 5 March 2007
Well I’m stlll going through it, and on my days off from being a fashionista, you can usually find me in an Adidas tracksuit practicing my knee-spins.
For those of you who are strangers to old school hip hop, cast your mind back to Hansel’s break-dance fight in the final scene of Zoolander – the Ben Stiller comedy that’s my life condensed into 89 minutes – and you’ll get the idea.
Just had word that Sugapop, from the West Coast breakdancing crew The Electric Boogaloos, is coming to London for the Red Bull Beat Battle in April, and for the Breakin’ Convention – an international festival of hip hop dance theatre at the Sadler’s Wells Theatre in May.
The Electric Boogaloos choreographed Michael Jackson’s Beat It and Thriller videos, so respect where it’s due, and it was Sugapop who told me there are no bad dance students, only bad teachers. He’s already dropped me a My Space message to say we gonna get funky, and let’s hang out when he’s in London, and I can’t believe I’ll get another chance to dance with a living legend.
I’d better step it up for when Sugapop gets here – there’s no way I’m going to crash and burn in front of a member of The Electric Boogaloos - so tonight I’m heading to Jimmy J’s street lockin class at Pineapple Dance Studio to start raising my game.
